Everybody in the club get tipsy – it´s Valentines

The most loved, and dare we say most hated, day of the year is just around the corner, the infamous Valentines Day.  If all you want on this day, is to drown your dissapointment in copious amounts of alcohol, the least you can do is to do it in style. Check out The Edited´s recommendations for great watering holes in Oslo.

Rouleur, Ullevålsveien

Rouleur is a favorite bar amongst the locals at St Hanshaugen, but it has also become a destination for the rest of Oslo´s cultural “elite”, and in general all of this city´s cool cats. This place is just big enough, just small enough, to see friendly faces but also to hide in corners. If you want to avoid meeting people you know on your Valentine´s date, if you are an Oslo local that is, maybe avoid this place. Rouleur is infamous for attracting  groups of guys who loves their bikes, this is because there is a bike shop connected to the bar, and men from the local running club arriving in very very small running shorts, whats not to love. But if that is not quite your vibe, rest assured, all the writers, artists, actresses, politicians etc etc hang out here too. Other than the who´s who of Oslo they have excellent wine, a decent Negroni, good music and moody bartenders. We love the people watching from the much coveted seats in the big windows here. Rolla for life.

Othilia, Grand Hotel

Maybe a slightly unconventional recommendation, but if there is another thing we love, it is a good hotel bar. There are a couple in Oslo, weirdly it is not really a big thing here,  but Othelia does the job. A snacksy little bar in an even snacksier little hotel, our beloved Grand Hotel.  The bartenders are very professional, and make a Vodka Martini exactly to our liking, which is no easy task we can assure you. They service is great and efficient, the bartenders know exactly what they are doing.  They also have great bar snacks and you can even order dishes from the menu at Palmen. We love sitting in the bar here, watching the crowd that comes in and out of the lobby, lots of different personalities and fashion walking in and out, And the best thing is, if you have a Vodka Martini too many, they also have a place for you to sleep it off.

Vodka is my Valentine

Fuglen, Universitetsgata

Japanese/Norwegian coffee place by day, cool cocktail place by night. Fuglen has  two different branches in Oslo, and also quite a few in Japan, but the one in Universitetsgata is the one we tend to go to. Very on point 60´s-style retro interior, they have really seen it through with furniture you would have found in your grandparents home and deep couches you can sit down in, and struggle to get out of. This place has an interesting mixed clientele, where you will find anything from students from the nearby Universitetet in Oslo, to Japanese tourists who has come to seek out a taste of home. They do really good events at night with great bands playing and poetry being read. Love it. Their cocktails are also delish.

Nektar, Fredensborgveien

This little secret is no secret but we wish it was a secret, but it isn´t. This place always gets recommended, with good reason. This place is a treasure. Love sitting in the bar, or in the staircase if everything is full, and it often is, in this little gem of a place. It is a family run affair, with an incredible wine list and an, dare we say, even better Spotify-list. Kidding, not kidding. Old hip hop blasting, cosy and warm, lots of quality people, and their legendary anchovy toast. They have also opened a little sister place, slightly more casual, Happy Ending. Both come highly recommended.

Merkur, Bjerregaards Gate

If romance was a wine and sake bar, it would be Merkur. This bar has a huge installation of the planet Merkur, and the world´s smallest toilet, how anyone fits in there is an actual miracle. Anything can happen at Merkur, its just one of those places. They have a great selection of wine and sake, some of the best sake we have ever had was here, not that we have been to Japan yet but as far as that is a solid statement, it was. They also do good Old Fashioned, Negroni and Vodka Martini, basically all the cocktails that really can tip you over the edge. We love this place, go there sometime.

Perla, Helgesensgate

There are not that many places in Oslo where you can go and get served a really good spicy Bloody Mary or a delicious Michelada, made exactly the way it should be made, but here you can. This pearl of a place, no pun intended, is a mix of Sofienbergsparken and Latin-America. They have a great cocktail list, and also lots of good beer, but the cocktails are what we would go for.  The bar is quite small but seems to fit a lot of people anyway. They often do live music, and best of all, they are open on Sundays! Amazing place to hang out on lazy Sunday afternoons, with great cocktails in hand and latin music on the ear.

Svanen, Karl Johans Gate

Don´t let the location of this place scare you off! Even though Svanen rests it´s wings in the somewhat dreaded Karl Johans Gate, it serves as a sanctuary to your nerves once you are in. Which is also quite ironic as this place used to be an apothecary. They have kept the beautiful ceilings, the mahogany furnishings and marble countertops, which was the furnishings from when this place opened in 1896. The place is really stunning. The bartenders are great, the service is great, the cocktails are great, it is all just great. Svanen is also dimly lit and a perfect date spot where there are plenty of possibilities for hiding away as you get served your medicine of choice.
